Hydrotherapy is a specialist physiotherapy treatment based in water, which is above the temperature of normal swimming pools. Hydrotherapy is used to treat a number of different conditions and injuries and can have fantastic outcomes.
Our hydrotherapy pool in Henbury, Bristol, is kept at 32 – 34 degrees, with ‘Endless Currents’, massage jets and an underwater treadmill. We also have above and underwater high definition video cameras that can be used to look at gait / swimming analysis when required. We have modern changing rooms and showers, and the pool is ‘easy access’, although we do not have a hoist. Our physiotherapists will use a range of aids and adaptations to design a tailored treatment programme to suit your needs.
Hydrotherapy can be used to speed up the recovery of patients that are unable to weight-bear or can only partially weight-bear following surgery or injury, by increasing range of movement and maintaining muscle strength.
Due to the buoyancy properties and temperature of the water, hydrotherapy allows you to make substantial improvements during treatment sessions. Your physiotherapist may combine hydrotherapy with land based treatments to maximise your potential.
Conditions that may be treated with hydrotherapy include:
Hydrotherapy is an extremely beneficial physiotherapy treatment for a wide range of conditions and injuries. Your physiotherapist will decide the best rehabilitation programme to help you return to your normal activities of daily living as soon as possible. You do not need to be able to swim to undergo hydrotherapy – in fact we often have patients that are hydrophobic!
